Public urged to avoid public order events
*****************************************

Chief Superintendent of the Police Public Relations Branch, Mr Alfred Ma Wai-luk, has urged the public not to take part in public meetings and processions today (December 18) for their own safety.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Convention and Exhibition Centre this afternoon, Mr Ma said about 900 people had been rounded up following the disturbances in Wan Chai yesterday (December 17). He said they would be dealt with according to Hong Kong law and established procedures.

A total of 97 people, including 39 Police officers, were injured during the disturbances.

Food and water were delivered to the protestors at Gloucester Road this morning.

As some public order events continue today, Principal Transport Officer, Mr Albert Su, called on motorists to avoid Hong Kong Island, particularly Wan Chai and Causeway Bay.
