Drug trafficking syndicate smashed in Wong Tai Sin
**************************************************

Police believed to have neutralized a drug trafficking syndicate active in Wong Tai Sin after the arrest of five persons in an undercover operation.

The intelligence-based operation, codenamed ¡§Rainstorm¡¨, was mounted by officers of the Special Duty Squad and Crime Unit of Wong Tai Sin District with an aim to combat a drug trafficking syndicate operating in Tung Tau Estate.

The operation turned overt yesterday (December 2) after a number of controlled buy transactions were successfully completed by an undercover Police officer from mid-November.

Two men and three women aged between 23 and 56, including the 56-year-old male mastermind of the syndicate, were arrested for conspiracy to traffic in dangerous drugs and possession of equipment fit for injection of dangerous drugs right after yesterday¡¦s transaction.

The operation has led to the seizure of 19 packets of heroin, 11 tablets of midazolam and about $25,900 cash.

All the arrested persons are still being detained for enquiries.

In April 2004, Police mounted a similar operation, codenamed ¡§Grandroom¡¨, against drug trafficking activities in the district, which resulted in eight persons being sentenced to five to 12 years¡¦ imprisonment for conspiracy to traffic in dangerous drugs.

Police would conduct similar operations from time to time to combat such activities. Police warned that trafficking in dangerous drugs is a serious offence liable to heavy penalties.
