Community programmes to keep Hong Kong clean (With photos)
**********************************************************

To sustain public awareness to keep the environment clean and hygienic and to observe personal hygiene in preparing against an influenza pandemic, a series of community cleaning and hygiene education activities are being launched in all 18 districts until early next year.

The series of community programmes was kicked off with the launching of the Community Cleanliness Day on November 20 in which over 9,000 people participated in some 30 territory-wide cleaning activities to enhance Hong Kong's preparedness against a pandemic of influenza.

Over 230 community cleansing and hygiene programmes, including talks on hygiene and influenza, roving exhibitions, bus parades, home cleaning for the elderly, cleaning slogan and poster contests, will be organised in the 18 districts by District Councils and District Clean Hong Kong Committees in collaboration with relevant government departments. More than 80,000 people are expected to take part in these activities.

Speaking at one of the cleansing education programmes held in Sha Tin today (December 3), the Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan, said that wide support from the community was crucial to sustain concerted efforts to keep the environment clean and hygienic.

The event, organised by the Sha Tin District Clean Hong Kong Committee, was taken part by over 500 participants today, and over 450 children from more than 20 kindergartens and primary schools in the district were crowned as cleansing angels and pioneers to help spread cleanliness messages to their families, schools and neighbourhood.
