Results of the 2004 Annual Surveys of Storage, Communication, Banking, Financing, Insurance and Business Services
**********************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) released today (December 2) results of the 2004 Annual Survey of Storage, Communication, Financing, Insurance and Business Services; and the 2004 Annual Survey of Banks, Deposit-taking Companies, Restricted Licence Banks and Representative Offices of Foreign Banks.

According to these two surveys, total receipts (including business receipts and other income) of the six industries covered, viz. the storage, communications, financing (except banking), business services, insurance and banking industries, amounted to $652.1 billion in 2004, up by 14% over 2003.

Comparing 2004 with 2003, total receipts of the insurance industry rose by 19%, supported mainly by the continued growth in the life insurance business.  Total receipts of the financing (except banking) and storage industries both increased by 17%, attributable to the buoyant local stock market and the growth in import and export trades respectively.  The total receipts of the business services, banking and communications industries increased by 14%, 8% and 6% respectively.

Owing to the special feature of business operations in the insurance and banking industries, gross surplus and value added of the two industries were not compiled.

The gross surplus (i.e. total receipts less operating expenses, compensation of employees and value of purchases of goods for sale) of the other four industries [viz. storage, communications, financing (except banking) and business services] taken together amounted to $155.7 billion in 2004, representing an increase of 18% over 2003.

The value added of these four industries taken together increased by 10% over 2003 to $105.0 billion.  Within this total, the value added of the financing (except banking), business services and storage industries increased by 22%, 16% and 9% respectively, while that of the communications industry decreased by 14%.

Principal statistics in respect of the six industries covered by these two surveys are given in the table attached.
