Results of the 2004 Annual Survey of Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels

According to the results of the 2004 Annual Survey of Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels released today (December 2) by the Census and Statistics Department, total receipts (i.e. sales and other receipts) of hotels and boarding houses, import and export trade, retail trade, restaurants, and wholesale trade increased by 36.5%, 13.2%, 13.0%, 13.0% and 4.8% respectively in 2004 as compared with 2003.  For all the above sectors taken together, total receipts increased by 12.8% in 2004.

2. In the hotels and boarding houses industry, total receipts amounted to $17 billion in 2004.  Gross surplus, which equals total receipts less total operating expenditure, accounted for 28.8% of total receipts in 2004, or 12.6 percentage points higher than that of 16.2% in 2003.  Value added of the hotels and boarding houses industry, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 48.1% over 2003 to $10 billion.

3. In the import and export trade, total receipts amounted to $2,328 billion in 2004.  Gross surplus accounted for 6.9% of total receipts in 2004, or 0.5 of a percentage point higher than that of 6.4% in 2003.  Value added increased by 8.4% over 2003 to $261 billion.

4. In the retail trade, total receipts amounted to $217 billion in 2004.  Gross surplus accounted for 7.5% of total receipts in 2004, or 2.2 percentage points higher than that of 5.3% in 2003.  Value added increased by 29.2% compared with that in 2003 to $34 billion.

5. In the restaurants trade, total receipts amounted to $60 billion in 2004.  Gross surplus accounted for 4.0% of total receipts in 2004, virtually unchanged from that in 2003.  Value added increased by 16.5% compared with that in 2003 to $21 billion.

6. In the wholesale trade, total receipts amounted to $154 billion in 2004.  Gross surplus accounted for 3.3% of total receipts in 2004, virtually unchanged from that in 2003.  Value added increased by 11.9% compared with that in 2003 to $13 billion.

7. The attached table compares selected principal statistics by major industry group between 2003 and 2004.
