Results of the 2004 Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services

According to the results of the 2004 Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services released today (December 1) by the Census and Statistics Department, total receipts (including business receipts and other income) of the whole transport sector amounted to $375.9 billion in 2004, representing an increase of 25% over 2003.

2. The gross surplus of the whole transport sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, increased by 19.4% over a year earlier to $49.6 billion in 2004.  The gross surplus accounted for 13.2% of total receipts in 2004.

3. The value added of the whole transport sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, amounted to $99.2 billion in 2004, representing an increase of 13.7% compared with 2003.

4. Within the transport sector, the four largest major industry groups in terms of value added in 2004 were (1) air transport, (2) land passenger transport, (3) services incidental to transport, and (4) ocean and coastal water transport. They together accounted for 83.6% of the total value added of the whole sector.

5. In the air transport industry, total receipts amounted to $76.1 billion in 2004. Gross surplus was $15 billion and accounted for 19.7% of total receipts in 2004. Value added increased significantly by 24.3% over 2003 to $28.2 billion.

6. In the land passenger transport industry, total receipts amounted to $31 billion in 2004. Gross surplus was $9 billion and accounted for 28.9% of total receipts in 2004. Value added increased moderately by 5.5% over 2003 to $20.6 billion.

7. In the services incidental to transport industry, total receipts amounted to $173.5 billion in 2004. Gross surplus was HK$ 7.7 billion and accounted for 4.4% of total receipts in 2004. Value added increased by 15.5% over 2003 to $17.1 billion.

8. In the ocean and coastal water transport industry, total receipts amounted to $58 billion in 2004. Gross surplus was HK$ 11.7 billion and accounted for 20.2% of total receipts in 2004. Value added increased by 11.2% over 2003 to $17 billion.

9. The principal statistics for the transport and related services, with breakdowns by major industry group, are shown in the attached table.
