The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the territory's eight main bonsai associations will launch the Hong Kong Bonsai Exhibition for the first time, at the Banyan Court of Kowloon Park from tomorrow (November 25) to December 4. Admission is free.
Shape and spatial arrangement are essential to the art of bonsai, but the essence of the art is to reflect the beauty of nature.
Plants that are commonly used for bonsai horticulture are Fukien Tea, Sageretia, Fire-thorn, Serissa, Buddhist Pine, Elm, Rhododendron and Bougainvillea.
Plants of developed roots, short stems and small leaves with lustre are generally better choices for bonsai purposes. And flowering plants should be able to stand a long time to be appreciated.
The art of bonsai has evolved in different areas over its long history of development, and has a variety of styles.
Matching pots and tables are also important to complement the beauty of the plants.

November 26-December 4 (7am-6pm)
Hong Kong Bonsai Exhibition is presented by LCSD, and co-organised by Association of Horticulture Lantau Island, Sha Tin Bonsai Association, Penjing and Artstone of Asia, Hong Kong Penjing & Artstone Society, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Bonsai International, The Yuen Yuen Institute and Ching Chung Taoist Association of Hong Kong.
