Community geared up to keep Hong Kong clean
*******************************************

The community is gearing up for a series of cleaning activities that will begin with a Community Cleanliness Day this Sunday (November 20) to enhance Hong Kong's preparedness against a pandemic of influenza.

Adopting the theme "Raise hygiene awareness, guard against influenza", cleaning events have been lined up to take place in all 18 districts from Sunday until early next year.

Members of District Councils and District Clean Hong Kong Committees will collaborate with relevant government departments in a variety of activities including clearance of hygiene blackspots, talks on hygiene and influenza, bus parades, roving exhibitions, reminding licensed food premises of good hygiene practices, distribution of publicity materials and home visits to the elderly to raise public awareness on environmental and personal hygiene.

Director of Home Affairs Mrs Pamela Tan said concerted efforts of the community were crucial to keep the environment clean and hygienic, as well as to sustain public awareness on the importance of observing personal hygiene in preparing against an influenza pandemic.

Mrs Tan expressed her sincere thanks to the District Councils and District Clean Hong Kong Committees for their full support of the campaign and for helping to recruit community volunteers to participate in the activities.

Major events of the Community Cleanliness Day are: health talks and distribution of leaflets in Kowloon City; inspection and cleansing of rear lanes in Yau Tsim Mong and Wong Tai Sin; roving exhibition in Central and Western District; study camp in Sai Kung; cleaning operations in public housing estates in Sham Shui Po and Yuen Long; and special cleansing operations in parks.
