Shortly after 5.30am today (November 15), an inmate was found unconscious in the cell of Tung Tau Correctional Institution (TTCI) by a member of the patrol staff.
The inmate was immediately given first-aid treatment. The on-call Medical Officer of the institution and ambulance were also summoned. He was then taken to Eastern Hospital, where he was certified dead at 6.51am.
Police have been informed of the incident and an inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
The 38-year-old inmate, Hung Shing-chung, was convicted of being a member of a triad society and sentenced to 12 months' in prison. He was admitted to TTCI on August 5, 2005.
