A team of Hong Kong eight secondary school students has scored one gold, five silver and two bronze at the China Western Mathematical Olympiad 2005 (CWMO) in Chengdu, Sichuan.
"One of the team, Tsoi Yun-pui, is the first Hong Kong team member to win three successive golds in cross-territory mathematical competitions, subsequent to the CWMO last year and the International Mathmatical Olympiad (IMO) in July this year," a spokesman for the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) said today (November 10).
Held between November 4 and 8, CWMO 2005 was hosted by the China Mathematical Society Olympiad Committee (CMSOC), related education bodies and secondary schools. A total of 92 mathematically talented secondary students from 23 teams participated in the Olympiad.¡¨
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Hainan and Kazakhstan were specially invited to join 18 western provinces and municipalities including Ningxia, Xinjiang, Tibet, Qinghai, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Guizhou , Chongqing , Yunnan, Guangxi, Shanxi, Jiangxi to take part in the competition.
"CWMO is one of the major efforts of CMSOC contributing to the development of mathematics in the western regions," the spokesman said. "It aims at promoting mathematics education, advancing basic science education, enhancing students' mastery and appreciation of mathematics and training talented students. It also serves to step up the interflow of mathematics education among the western provinces as well as with other regions.
"All participants visited cultural relics and historical sites in Chengdu. The Hong Kong team members actively engaged themselves in the sharing activities, through which they found themselves better acquainted with their motherland. Their sense of national identity, communication and inter-personal skills were also strengthened."
The team members were selected from the IMO ¡V Hong Kong Preliminary Contest organised by the Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme. Established by EMB in late 2000, the scheme provided structured enhancement programmes in mathematics, science and other learning areas to help students develop their potential to the fullest.
