AFCD to collect sick and dead birds suspected of avian
influenza
*******************************************************

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) will collect sick and dead birds suspected of avian influenza found by the public starting today (October 27).

A department spokesman said the collection service is an emergency measure to strengthen the monitoring of avian influenza.

The public can call the Government hotline 1823 if suspicious sick or dead birds found. AFCD staff will advise and, when deemed necessary, collect the birds for examination and testing.

The department will remain vigilant and continue to operate its surveillance system with a view to protecting public health, the spokesman added.

The department has stepped up inspection of pet bird shops, including those in the Bird Garden, and reminded operators on the importance of properly handling faecal materials and dead birds. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has also stepped up hygienic measures and the frequency of cleansing in the Bird Garden.
