Public forum on building height restrictions
********************************************

The Planning Department will hold a public forum tomorrow (October 15) to gauge views on the proposed height restrictions for Wong Chuk Hang Business Area. Members of the public are invited to attend.

The forum, which is part of the two-month consultation exercise that began on September 15, will be held at the function room of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, 2/F, 99 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong at 9.30am. Registration will start at 9.15am.

A spokesman for the Planning Department said the principal objective for imposing building height restrictions in Wong Chuk Hang Business Area was to reinforce the intrinsic character and natural attributes of Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau as a whole.

"Wong Chuk Hang Business Area is facing considerable redevelopment pressures, particularly for high-rise hotel and commercial uses. We need to formulate building height control to ensure that the gradual transformation of the district will not have a negative impact on the area's visual quality," the spokesman said.

"Taking into account the natural topography of the area, two main height bands are proposed - buildings to the south of Wong Chuk Hang Road should be restricted to a maximum building height of 120mPD, and those to its north should be limited to 140mPD."

The spokesman said the intention was to achieve a stepped height profile and a more discernible townscape leading down to the waterfront.

"Based on the comments received, the building height restrictions will be further refined before being incorporated into the statutory plan."
