Designation of Hong Kong Wetland Park Special Area
**************************************************

"Hong Kong Wetland Park (HKWP) will be designated as a Special Area in accordance with the Hong Kong Wetland Park (Special Area) Order 2005 made under section 24(1) of the Country Parks Ordinance, to empower the Country and Marine Parks Authority, that is, the Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, to manage the HKWP," a spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said today (September 30).

The Hong Kong Wetland Park (Special Area) Order 2005, which will take effect on tomorrow October 1, will enable better protection and management of the HKWP.

"In view of the importance of the HKWP, it is necessary to provide a proper legal framework for the authority, to protect and manage the HKWP to achieve the conservation, education, and tourism objectives and up to the desired standards of other ecological facilities. After designation, the authority will be responsible for managing the park. Activities in the park will be subject to control of the Country Parks and Special Areas Regulations," the spokesman said.

"Since construction work is still in progress at the park, the Special Area is not yet open to the public," the spokesman added.
