Speech by SHA at HK Harbour Day Press Conference
************************************************

Following is the speech by the Secretary for Home Affairs, Dr Patrick Ho, at the Hong Kong Harbour Day Press Conference today (September 18):

Mr Olijve, Mr Van Heel, ladies and gentlemen,

On November 13, there will be a series of activities happening around the Victoria Harbour.  Hong Kong people will be able to enjoy these activities as well as our valuable community asset - the Harbour. I welcome the Hong Kong Harbour Day Organising Committee's initiative and enthusiasm in launching such spectacular events.

Hong Kong has a beautiful harbour that we embrace with pride, and which many envy.  This harbour, a symbol of the city of Hong Kong, is an integral part of Hong Kong's heritage and one of the most valuable public assets. It is also a platform upon which the lives of the Hong Kong people, and its history, are celebrated. Everyone living in Hong Kong has a connection, and an attachment to the harbour: it is part of our daily lives, and it is fundamental to Hong Kong's past, present and future.

The Government is committed to working closely with the community to enhance the waterfront areas of the Victoria Harbour with a view not only to creating an enjoyable harbour-front, and to facilitating other economic activities for the community, but to celebrate the harbour which embodies our collective memories and achievements which captures our imagination and our aspirations, and upholds our values and our lives.

To showcase the variety of recreational activities at our harbour, the Hong Kong Harbour Day Organising Committee launches the Hong Kong Harbour Day with highlights such as the Round the Island Race and the Harbour Day Parade, which add festivities to the busy living rhythm of Hong Kong.

I am pleased to know that there will be a fleet of more than 200 yachts, windsurfers and rowers in a full circumnavigation of the Hong Kong Island. As for the parade, service vessels from various government departments will also be taking part to join with ferries, fishing boats, traditional Chinese junks and modern yachts to parade through the Harbour from Lei Yui Mun to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and back. I am sure these events will meet with keen participation and strong support from the community.

I take this opportunity to wish the Hong Kong Harbour Day every success.

     Thank you.
