Suspected smuggled goods worth $820,000 seized off Ap Chau
**********************************************************

The Small Boat Division of the Marine Police seized $820,000 worth of suspected smuggled goods off Ap Chau early yesterday morning (August 28).

At about 2.10am yesterday, Police spotted two unlit speedboats travelling at high speed near Ap Chau towards Mainland China.

Two Police vessels gave chase but the two speedboats fled immediately.  When one police vessel attempted to intercept one of the speedboats, it made an extremely sharp turn and collided with the police vessel at north of Chek Kok Tau.  After the collision, the speedboat eventually stopped but the coxswain was picked up by another unlit speedboat and fled towards Mainland sea border.

Five boxes of vehicle parts, 16 boxes of desktop computer hard disks, two boxes of notebook computer hard disks and four boxes of used mobile phones with a total value of $820,000 were found onboard the abandoned speedboat.

The case is classified as "attempting to export unmanifested cargo".  It was handed over to the Customs and Excise Department for follow-up actions.
