Government appoints Science Advisor (with photo)

    The Government today (August 25) announced the appointment of Professor Yue On-ching as Science Adviser in the Innovation and Technology Commission for three years with effect from September 1, 2005.

     Professor Yue will succeed Professor Wong Wing-sing who will leave the commission at the end of this month on completion of his two years' service.

     Professor Yue will provide specialist advice on matters related to innovation and technology development.  As the Science Adviser, he will tender technical advice to the senior level of the Government and the Communications and Technology Branch.  

     He will also provide assistance and advice to the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology on technology development including examination and monitoring of projects proposed by research and development centres to be set up under the Government's new strategic framework for innovation and technology, formulation of themes and focus areas for solicitations to the Innovation and Technology Fund, and evaluation of relevant applications to the Fund.

     Professor Yue has a strong track record in wireless communications, data networking and telecommunications. He obtained his PhD at University of California in San Diego and had 26 years of research experience on wireless networking at a world-renowned research institution in telecommunications and networking in the United States.

     He was the research and development director of this institution before joining the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2003 as a visiting professor of the Department of Information Engineering. He was appointed Director of Mobile Technologies Centre in CUHK in November, 2003.

     "We are very pleased and honoured to have Professor Yue's service for the Government.  He will strengthen the Government's technological capability and enrich it with his extensive research and industrial experience," the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Mr Anthony Wong said.

     Mr Wong also thanked the former Science Adviser, Professor Wong, for his contribution to the commission.

     "Professor Wong provided much useful advice  on the Government's innovation and technology programmes and contributed significantly to the formulation and implementation of the new strategy of the innovation and technology development," he said.
