Penny's Bay Police Post

***********************

The Director of Operations, Mr Yam Tat-wing, today (August 12) officiated at the opening ceremony of the Penny's Bay Police Post, an environmental friendly police facility to cater to the demand for police services following the opening of the Hong Kong International Theme Park on September 12.

Situated in the Utility Yard, adjacent to the vehicular access to the Park in Penny's Bay, North Lantau, the post is part of the infrastructure and community facilities to support the theme park. It will service as a reporting centre to deal with reports of lost property by visitors, miscellaneous crimes and other requests for police assistance.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Police Post, Mr Yam said that aside from providing a day-to-day report room service to visitors from all over the world, the Penny's Bay Police Post could also function as a Command Post to co-ordinate with other departments in the event of major incident in the Theme Park or its nearby vicinity.

The Police Post is a single storey building equipped with a report room, a control room, interview rooms, temporary holding areas, communication rooms and car park. The corporate colours of the Force, light grey and navy blue, are extensively adopted in the report room while the surrounding areas of the post blend with the "garden theme" of the Park.

Mr Yam also took the opportunity to thank colleagues of the Architectural Services and Electrical and Mechanical Services departments for their professional support and commitment to making the Post both environmental friendly and functional authentically.

Environmental features which have been incorporated in the building design include:

* use of photo-voltaic (solar) panels on the low pitch metal roof for renewable energy;

* use of prefabricated columns, latticework, roof support brackets and artificial stone walls to reduce pollution and waste in construction and maintenance;

* use of environmental friendly materials such as non-Ozone depletion refrigerant in the air conditioning unit;

* rainwater recycling installation for washing vehicles and watering plants;

* high windows and skylights in the report room and control room and glass canopy for covered car park to allow maximum use of daylight; and

* roof overhang design and landscaping to achieve higher energy efficiency by low overall thermal transfer.

Also officiating at today's opening ceremony were Regional Commander of New Territories South, Mr Tang How-kong; Legislative Councilor, Mr Lam Wai-keung; Chairman of Islands District Fight Crime Committee, Mr Lam Kit-sing; Chief Project Manager of Architectural Services Department, Mr Ian Dickinson; and Chief Superintendent, Planning and Development Branch, Ms Barbara Willison.
