SETW speaks on regional air quality

***********************************

Following is a transcript (English portion) of the media session by the Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works, Dr Sarah Liao, at CGO West Wing this afternoon (July 19):

Reporter: Would you comment in English...?

Dr Liao: We are very pleased to have Mr Li Qing from the Guangdong Environmental Protection Bureau visiting us with a team of members from six cities. The main purpose of the visit is that we have a location where we can exchange ideas. We actually have forum to discuss two important issues. One is the air monitoring network of sixteen stations in the region where Hong Kong has three and thirteen are in the Pearl River Delta and the Guangdong area. The other topic that we discussed is how to reduce vehicular emission through the control of vehicle standard and also fuel standard. And Mr Li has visited our testing facilities in Yuen Long on black smoke and also looked at our gas station, the LPG station as well as visited Mai Po to see our ecological conservation.

Reporter: ...

Dr Liao: No, the standards are actually all in line because we do have a target to reach in 2010. So this is all in place. It?s not to discuss new measures or setting new standards. We are actually implementing what we have already agreed upon. And this is an exchange of idea on how to do better.
