Sara Baras to hitch up her flamenco skirt in
September

*********************************************

One of Spain's most popular and celebrated flamenco dancers, the spellbinding Sara Baras will present her eloquent suite of dances soon in Hong Kong.

A perfect showcase for Baras' dazzling talent, "Suenos" will be staged at 8.15pm from September 9 to 11 (Friday to Sunday) at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

Known for her brilliant footwork and powerful presence, Baras will join guest artist Jose Serrano, accompanied by a company of dancers and a live music ensemble for this programme of traditional flamenco.

"Suenos" is a showcase of the various traditional forms of flamenco including the "solea", the "jaleo" and the fiery "farruca", a dance normally reserved for male dancers which here takes on a feminine quality. In a twist on flamenco conventions, the company led by Baras redefines the genre for women, journeying through many different styles in the process. Elegant and passionate, their technical prowess distinguishes Sara Baras and her company as some of the finest flamenco performers around today.

"Suenos" recently made flamenco box office history with a record-breaking five-month show in Madrid and has been touring continental Europe, the UK, US and at the World Expo in Aichi, Japan.

Sara Baras has performed with some of the greatest names in flamenco, including Enrique Morente, Javier Baron, Paco Pena, Merche Esmeralda, el Guito and Antonio Canales. Forming her own company in 1998, she has gone on to become a star in her own right, performing at international venues and festivals to great acclaim.

"Suenos" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
