Roderick Woo appointed Privacy Commissioner for
Personal Data

************************************************

The Government today (April 22) announced the appointment of Mr Roderick Bun Woo, JP, as the new Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data for five years with effect from August 1, 2005.

Mr Woo, a solicitor in private practice (in Hong Kong and London) for nearly 34 years, has participated extensively in public and community service since 1991. He is now the Deputy Chairman of the Occupational Retirement Schemes Appeal Board as well as a member of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority. A former President of The Law Society of Hong Kong, Mr Woo has been the society's representative on the Council of the International Bar Association for many years.

"We are glad that Mr Woo has accepted the appointment," a government spokesman said.

"Mr Woo's strong legal background well qualifies him to be the Privacy Commissioner. As Privacy Commissioner, he will lead the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, to monitor and supervise the implementation of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance in Hong Kong, and liaise and work with relevant overseas authorities on protection of data privacy."

Ends/Friday, April 22, 2005
