Nomination for EC vacancies opens Saturday

    Supplementary nominations for the Religious Subsector and nominations for by-elections in 16 other subsectors of the Election Committee (EC) will be accepted between Saturday (April 9) and April 15.

    Of the 33 vacancies in the 17 subsectors concerned, 27 vacancies in 16 subsectors will be filled by by-elections with polls set for May 1 (Sunday), a spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) said today (April 7).

    The distribution of vacancies in these 16 subsectors is as follows:

Accountancy Subsector (2 vacancies)

    The remaining six vacancies are found in the Religious Subsector and will be filled by supplementary nominations. The number of members to be nominated by each of the religious bodies concerned is as follows:

Chinese Muslim Cultural and Fraternal Association (1 vacancy)

Hong Kong Christian Council (1 vacancy)

The Hong Kong Taoist Association (3 vacancies)

The Confucian Academy (1 vacancy)

    Nomination forms for the by-elections can be obtained from District Offices, the offices of the relevant Returning Officers and the REO, or downloaded at www.gov.hk/reo.

    Forms for supplementary nomination in the Religious Subsector are available at the office of the responsible Returning Officer and the REO, or downloaded at the above website.

    Nominees for the by-elections should personally hand in their nomination forms to the relevant Returning Officer during ordinary business hours (that is, from 9am to 5pm from Monday to Friday and from 9am to 12noon on Saturday) on any day other than a general holiday from April 9, 2005, to April 15, 2005, both days inclusive.

    Supplementary nominations can be submitted by the representative of the religious bodies concerned to the responsible Returning Officer.

    Polls will be held on May 1, 2005 (Sunday) for all the subsectors in which the number of validly nominated candidates exceeds the number of EC member(s) to be returned.

    The vacancies in the EC are being filled to pave way for the election of a new Chief Executive on July 10 (Sunday).
