The Government today (March 31) announced appointments to the Community Sports Committee, Elite Sports Committee and the Major Sports Events Committee.
The term of appointment of the three committees will be from April 1, 2005 to December 31, 2006. This is to tie in with the current term of the Sports Commission.
The three committees will continue to be chaired by the incumbent chairmen, Mr Chau How-chen, Mr Victor Hui Chun-fui, and Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming, respectively.
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Dr Patrick Ho, said that under the direction of the Sports Commission, these three committees would continue to play a pivotal role in identifying and addressing key issues that were important for the long term sports development in Hong Kong.
"The extensive knowledge and experience of members are instrumental in helping the Government formulate sport policies and programmes that respond to the needs of the community in a timely manner," Dr Ho said.
He also expressed gratitude to members of the three committees for their invaluable contribution over the past term in promoting community sports, fostering elite sports development and laying the framework to facilitate sports organisations to hold major sports events in Hong Kong. Dr Ho believes that the new members will bring new insights and perspectives to the work of the Sports Commission.
"With the wide network of members on the three committees, the Sports Commission will be in a better position to mobilise better community participation in building a sporting culture for Hong Kong," Dr Ho added.
The Community Sports Committee was established in October, 2003, to advise the Government on strategies to promote community participation in sports, and ways to foster partnership with different sectors in all districts for promotion of community sports.
Dr Cheung Siu-yin and Dr Lo Wing-lok have been appointed as new members.
The Elite Sports Committee was set up in April, 2004, to advise the Government on the strategies and long-term objective for providing elite training programmes for HKSAR athletes with a view to achieving international sporting success. Two new members - Dr Edwin Cheng Kwok-kit, and Mr Johnny Woo Wai-man - have been appointed.
The Major Sports Events Committee was set up in October, 2003, to advise the Government on initiatives for the promotion of major sports events in Hong Kong. Five new members - Mr Choi Fu-wah, Mr Raymond Leung Hai-ming, Mr Brian Li Tze-leung, Mr Wilfred Ng Sau-kei and Mr Wesley Wan - have been appointed. Mr A F M Conway will participate in the work of the Major Sports Events Committee as representative of Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China.
