Appointments to Hong Kong Sports Institute Limited

The Government today (March 30) announced the appointment of Mr Eric Li Ka-cheung as Chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Institute Limited (HKSIL) to replace the incumbent, Mr Victor Hui Chun-fui.  Four new members have also been appointed to the HKSIL Board of Directors.  The current two vice-chairmen and all the existing non-official directors have been reappointed.

The term of appointment of the board of directors will be for two years from April 1, 2005, until March 31, 2007.

The new members are Dr Julian Chang, Mr Liao Cheung-kong, Martin, Mr Tang Kwai-nang, and Mr Carlson Tong.  

The current vice-chairmen and non-official directors who have been reappointed are Professor Chan Kai-ming (vice-chairman), Mr Tommy Tam Hok-lam (vice-chairman), Mr Lowell Chang Ur-way, Mr John Fan Kam-ping, Professor Frank Fu Hoo-kin, Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming, Mr Tsin Yan-pui and Mr Johnny Woo Wai-man.  Mrs Vivien Fung Lau Chiang-chu was appointed in the capacity of the representative of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC).

The Secretary for Home Affairs, Dr Patrick Ho Chi-ping, said members of the board came from diverse backgrounds with extensive expertise and experience in different fields, such as sports administration, medicine, academics, education, business and management.  

"These disciplines of knowledge are important for the effective operation and long term development of the HKSIL as a delivery agent for high performance sports in Hong Kong," Dr Ho said.

"I look forward to working with the incoming chairman and the new board of directors in furthering the development of elite sports in Hong Kong."

"Mr Li's extensive experience and well-proven credentials in heading various public bodies will certainly provide strong and clear leadership in the work of the HKSIL," Dr Ho said.

He also paid tribute to the out-going chairman, Mr Victor Hui Chun-fui, for his dedication and enthusiasm in advancing elite sports development over the past term.

"Mr Hui has made valuable contribution in reconstituting the HKSIL, and has laid solid foundation in the work of the HKSIL.  I would like to express my deepest gratitude for his steadfast leadership and admirable resilience in steering the HKSIL to a new direction," Dr Ho said.

The HKSIL was established on October 1, 2004.  Its aim is to provide an environment in which sporting talent can be identified, nurtured and developed to pursue excellence in sport.  Other than sports facilities, the support given to athletes includes elite coaching and training, sports science, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, athlete affairs and education, applied research and sports information.
