Senior Counsel Appointed

    The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

    The Honourable Chief Justice Andrew Kwok-nang Li is pleased to announce today (March 22) the appointment of six Senior Counsel of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. They are:

    Mr Peter David Clayton

    Mr Chan Chi Hung

    Mr Alexander Stuart King

    Mr Pow Wing Nin, Jason

    Mr David Gordon Pilbrow

    Mr Ian Charles McWalters

    The appointments are made by the Chief Justice under section 31A of the Legal Practitioners Ordinance.

    The appointments will take effect from the date of the Instrument of Appointment, which will be executed on April 23, 2005, when the ceremonial proceedings will be held at 10am in Court No. 7 in the High Court.

    The biographical notes of the newly appointed Senior Counsel are as follows:

Mr Peter David Clayton

    Mr Peter David Clayton, aged 55, received his education in the United Kingdom. Mr Clayton was called to the Bar in the United Kingdom in 1977 and worked for the Inland Revenue Solicitor's Office in London for about three years. He came to Hong Kong in 1981 and was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 1982. His practice has been in the civil field, initially in general civil litigation and intellectual property matters, and later specialising in civil engineering and building disputes, mostly in arbitration and appellate work therefrom. He sits as an arbitrator.

Mr Chan Chi Hung

    Mr Chan Chi Hung, aged 48, received his legal education in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. Mr Chan was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 1984. His practice is in general civil litigation with an emphasis on probate/administration of estate, property/land, conveyancing, trust/equity, and companies. Mr Chan has served as a member of the committee for the hearing of certain legal aid appeals.

Mr Alexander Stuart King

    Mr Alexander Stuart King, aged 52, received his legal education in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Mr King was admitted to practice in New Zealand in 1976 and in the United Kingdom in 1978. He practised criminal law in the United Kingdom and served briefly as a Crown Prosecutor in New Zealand. He came to Hong Kong and was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 1986. His practice has been in the criminal field encompassing both trials and appeals. In the past 10 years, he has developed a significant practice in commercial crime and corruption cases.

Mr Pow Wing Nin, Jason

    Mr Pow Wing Nin, Jason, aged 42, received his legal education in Hong Kong. Mr Pow was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 1986. He began his practice as a criminal barrister but his practice soon became predominantly civil. He developed his practice in the law of defamation while maintaining a general civil and commercial practice.

Mr David Gordon Pilbrow

    Mr David Gordon Pilbrow, aged 57, received his legal education in the United Kingdom. Having qualified as a solicitor in the United Kingdom, Mr Pilbrow came to Hong Kong in 1973 and worked in the matrimonial field. He was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 1989 and has specialised in the practice of family law since then.

Mr Ian Charles McWalters

    Mr Ian Charles McWalters, aged 54, received his legal education in Australia. Mr McWalters was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 2002. He had previously worked in the Papua New Guinea Public Solicitor's Office for five years and was appointed as a magistrate for five years. He took up appointment as a Crown Counsel in the Attorney General's Chambers in Hong Kong in 1985. He has served in the Prosecutions Division engaging in general prosecution work, advising other government departments and the ICAC and focusing on commercial crime and anti-corruption work in recent years. Mr McWalters has written and presented papers on Hong Kong's anti-corruption laws on many occasions.
