Science lecture to explore more about earthquakes and tsunamis

A public lecture entitled, "The Science of Earthquakes and Tsunamis", to explore the causes, mechanisms and effects of these powerful forces of nature will be held from 2.30pm to 4pm on February 6 at the Lecture Theatre, Hong Kong Science Museum.

Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum, the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Observatory, the lecture will look into the devastating earthquake and tsunami from the perspective of physics and geological science.

Speakers will include Associate Professor of the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Hong Kong Dr L S Chan, Associate Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Hong Kong Dr K W Chow, and Senior Scientific Officer of Hong Kong Observatory Dr W T Wong. The lecture will be conducted in Cantonese.

Following the lecture, a science film "Tsunami: The Killer Wave" will be screened from 4.30pm to 5.30pm at the same venue. Sponsored by the National Geographic Channel, the film will introduce the destructive effects of past tsunamis and decipher the threats future ones will pose. The film has English narration with Chinese subtitles.
