Another avian flu report in Vietnam

***********************************

The Department of Health is monitoring a report of avian influenza in Vietnam in which a nine-year-old boy was suspected to have died of the disease.

The department has been keeping a close watch on the situation and maintaining close liaison with relevant health authorities to obtain the latest information, a department spokesman said today (January 5).

"In fact, we have taken preventive measures since the last case of suspected avian flu was reported in Vietnam last week," he said.

In addition to the ongoing health screening measures including temperature screening at the airport, airlines operating all in-bound flights from Vietnam have been requested to broadcast health messages, advising passengers with coughs and fever to wear a mask and to approach the medical post on arrival.

"No travellers coming from Vietnam have been found to have symptoms of avian flu so far," the spokesman said.

"Leaflets containing information about the situation in Vietnam and health advice are also being distributed to passengers leaving for Vietnam.

"They are advised not to make any contact with chickens or to visit farms," he said.

"Letters were also sent to all doctors in Hong Kong and hospitals alerted about avian flu cases in Vietnam.

"They are required to report any suspected case to the Department of Health for prompt investigation and control measures," the spokesman said.

The department has also contacted people in the travel industry and advised them accordingly.
