Government to raise funds for tsunami victims

*********************************************

The Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan, urged the community to help the victims of the tsunami disaster areas by making generous donations at a Government fund-raising event this Saturday (January 1) organised in response to the United Nations' appeal.

Mrs Tan said in the past few days, she had been in touch with many warm-hearted citizens, community and charity organisations, and members of political parties. They were all eager to make a contribution.

The fund-raising event, a television show produced by Television Broadcasts Limited, will be held from 3pm to 5pm on January 1, 2005 at the Hong Kong Stadium. Local pop singers will perform to appeal for donations. Funds raised in the show will be passed to six international relief organizations - the Red Cross, World Vision, Oxfam, Medecins Sans Frontieres, United Nations Childeren's Fund (UNICEF) and the Salvation Army, for emergency relief operations.

TVB Jade will broadcast the show live. Admission to the show at the Hong Kong Stadium is free on a first come, first served basis.

Ends/Thursday, December 30, 2004
