Health advice to people going to devastated areas

*************************************************

The Department of Health today (December 28) advised members of the public going to areas in Asia and Africa recently devastated by the tsunamis to take precautionary measures against infectious diseases.

Dr Henry Kong, the department's Acting Chief Health Port Officer said travellers and personnel of the travel trade are advised to be vigilant in personal, food and environmental hygiene when going to these areas.

"We have contacted the World Health Organization and are closely monitoring the situation in the affected areas to ensure Hong Kong can get a clear picture in case of any major outbreak of infectious diseases as a result of the disaster," Dr Kong said.

As the sources of water and food in the affected areas may be contaminated, travellers staying there should only consume boiled or treated water and cooked food. This would reduce the risk of getting food poisoning, cholera and other food-borne diseases, Dr Kong said.

"They should also pay attention to the after shocks, tidal waves, flooding, landslides, falling objects, fire, electrical shocks and gas leakage and are advised to stay in accommodation that is safe and secure," he added.

As many of the affected areas are also endemic in mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever, Dr Kong called on travellers to wear long-sleeved clothing to prevent mosquito bites.

"They should also use insect repellent and mosquito nets when necessary," Dr Kong said.

"Bring along a list of emergency contact numbers (e.g. local emergency numbers, airlines, hotels, tour guides, relatives and friends).

"When feeling unwell, especially with a fever, inform hotel staff and your tour leader to arrange a medical consultation at once," Dr Kong said.

For more information, the public may visit the Travel Health website at http://www.info.gov.hk/trhealth/e_hkths.htm or contact the Port Health Travel Health Centre on 2961 8840 during office hours. Travellers outside Hong Kong may also dial the IDD 24-hour hotline at 8103 1717 for information.
