Ceremonial Opening of Legal Year 2005 to be postponed

*****************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

The Judiciary announced today (December 23) that the Ceremonial Opening of Legal Year 2005 ("The LYO") originally scheduled to be held at the City Hall on January 10, 2005 will be postponed to February 17, 2005.

A recent fire at the City Hall had caused extensive damage to the Concert Hall, which will not be available for use for the LYO as planned on January 10.

"Alternative venues have been explored but none has been found to be satisfactory," a Judiciary spokesperson explained.

"In the circumstances, it is decided that the LYO will be postponed to February 17 when it could be held at the City Hall," he added.

The ceremony will commence with an inspection of the Ceremonial Guard at 5 pm at the Edinburgh Place, to be followed by addresses to be delivered by the Hon Chief Justice Mr Andrew Kwok-nang Li, Secretary for Justice, Chairman of Hong Kong Bar Association and President of Law Society of Hong Kong in the Concert Hall.

Guests invited to the ceremony will be receiving separate letters from the Judiciary about the postponement.

The LYO is an important annual event which brings together the legal community. It underlines the importance of the rule of law and an independent Judiciary in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of individuals in our society.

Public are welcome to watch the inspection of the Ceremonial Guard at the Edinburgh Place.

Ends/Thursday, December 23, 2004
