Appointment of Justice of Appeal of High Court

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

The Judiciary today (December 20) announced the appointment of the Hon Mr Justice Robert Ching TANG, Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court, as Justice of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of the High Court. The appointment will take effect from January 3, 2005.

The biographical note of Mr Justice TANG is as follows:

Mr Justice TANG was born in Shanghai in 1947. After obtaining an LL.B. from Birmingham University in 1969, he was called to the Bar of Gray's Inn in England in 1969, to the Bar in Hong Kong in 1970, to the Bar of Victoria in Australia in 1984, to the Bar of the State of New York in USA in 1986 and was admitted as Barrister in Singapore in 1992. He was in private practice from 1970 and was appointed as Queen's Counsel in 1986. He served as Deputy District Judge and Deputy Judge of the High Court in 1982 and 1986 respectively. He was appointed as Recorder of the Court of First Instance of the High Court in 1995 and as Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court in April this year.
