Appointment of Government Chemist

The Government announced today (June 30) that Dr Ting Tai-lun will succeed Dr David George Clarke as Government Chemist with effect from July 1, 2004. Dr Clarke will proceed on pre-retirement leave on the same day.

Commenting on Dr Ting's appointment, the Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Joseph W P Wong, said: "Dr Ting possesses sound professional skills, solid experience in the work of the Government Laboratory and proven administrative abilities. I am confident that Dr Ting will lead the Government Laboratory in further enhancing the provision of professional and quality service."

Mr Wong also thanked Dr Clarke for his 27 years of loyal and dedicated service. He said: "Under Dr Clarke's leadership, the Government Laboratory has provided our community with quality analytical, forensic and advisory services. I wish him a happy retirement."

The following are brief biographical notes on Dr Clarke and Dr Ting:

Dr David George Clarke, JP

Dr Clarke, aged 56, first joined the Government as a chemist in November, 1976. He rose through the ranks to Senior Chemist in May, 1982, to Chief Chemist in August, 1994 and to Assistant Government Chemist in November, 1996. He was promoted to Government Chemist in May, 2001.

Dr Ting Tai-lun, JP

Dr Ting, aged 53, first joined the Government as an Environmental Protection Officer in August, 1980. He was appointed as a Chemist in November, 1981. He was promoted to Senior Chemist in July, 1990, to Chief Chemist in August, 1998 and to Assistant Government Chemist in October, 2001.
