Acting CS' transcript

*********************

Following is the transcript (English portion) of a media session by the Acting Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Michael Suen, at the West Wing lobby, Central Government Offices this (May 19) afternoon:

Acting Chief Secretary for Adminstration: Radio talk show compere Mr Allen Lee decided not to host Commercial Radio's talkshow out of his own considerations. I want to stress that the Government is determined to safeguard freedom of the press and freedom of expression in Hong Kong. These freedoms are an integral part of our daily life. Our newspapers are free to articulate their views in their own editorials every day. Members of the community can freely express their views on radio talk shows every day. Members of the Legislative Council and indeed any member of the community can freely express their views and be heard all over Hong Kong. Freedom of the press and freedom of expression are two important cornerstones underpinning our own success here in Hong Kong. These freedoms are also guaranteed by the relevant provisions in the Basic Law.

I also want to make the point that Hong Kong is the place where rule of law prevails. We will not tolerate any acts of violence or intimidation. The Police are fully capable and are determined to deal with such matters. Anyone under threat is advised to contact the Police as soon as possible so that the matter can be further investigated.

Reporter: Will the Government approach the three talk show hosts to try to find out more about what's going on?

Acting Chief Secretary for Administration: I'm given to understand that two of those persons involved have indeed contacted the Police and the cases are being investigated.

Reporter: How would you describe the resignation of these three talk show hosts?

Acting Chief Secretary for Administration: I'm afraid it's not a matter for me to characterise the circumstances leading to the resignation of the talk show hosts. They all said that they've got their individual reasons, and I think we should all respect their own choice.

(Please also refer to the Chinese portion of the transcript.)
