Following is the speech (translation) by the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, at the deck reception of the Task Group of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy tonight (May 1):
Vice-Admiral Yao, Lieutenant-General Ou, Director Gao, Commissioner Yang, Major-General Wang, commanders and officers, ladies and gentlemen,
Again, on behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), I extend our warm welcome to Vice-Admiral Yao, Lieutenant-General Ou and members of the Navy Task Group. I also thank Vice-Admiral Yao for inviting us to this reception. To mark the 55th anniversary of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, and with the approval of the Central People's Government, the PLA Navy Task Group comprising eight vessels is stopping over in Hong Kong as part of the celebrations.
We are proud to note that our PLA Navy has developed into a modern force of strategic importance with their hard work over half a century. They have contributed towards safeguarding our motherland's sovereignty and reunification. Looking at our Navy, we know that the Chinese people are standing on their own feet and the Chinese nation has revived.
Thank you, Vice-Admiral Yao, for the invitation to inspect destroyer "Shenzhen" and submarine "324". The tour of these two vessels - designed and built by China - gives me a direct feel of the glorious achievements in modernisation and national defence of our country. Moreover, the gallant array we see on board is most impressive, exemplifying a navy of might and chivalry.
Since our return to the motherland, the PLA garrison has solemnly assumed the defence responsibility for Hong Kong. More than six years on, this highly disciplined force has established an image of bravery and civility. The open days hosted by the Task Group have drawn an enthusiastic response from the public, which demonstrates the patriotism of Hong Kong people and their support and respect towards the navy and the troops. I express my heartfelt appreciation to Vice-Admiral Yao. Your invitation for the SAR Government to the event underlines the cordial relationship between the garrison and the SAR Government.
Lastly, on behalf of the SAR Government, let me extend our gratitude again to Vice-Admiral Yao, Lieutenant-General Ou and Major-General Wang. My best wishes go to you and all our friends here. Thank you.
