US and Taiwan poultry meat import suspension lifted

***************************************************

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today (April 30) that it would resume processing of applications for poultry meat import from the US, except Texas, and Taiwan with immediate effect.

As the outbreaks of avian influenza in the US and Taiwan have been brought under control and additional control measures for prevention of the disease have been implemented there, the department considered that the temporary suspension of poultry meat import from both places, except Texas, could be lifted today.

The resumption of import does not apply to Texas as it was previously affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza. But discussions will continue with the US authorities regarding the situation there.

Ends/Friday, April 30, 2004
