Appointment of High Court Judge

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

The Judiciary today (March 26) announced the appointment of Mr Robert Ching TANG, SC, JP as Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court. The appointment will take effect from April 2.

Mr Robert Ching TANG, who now holds office as a Recorder of the Court of First Instance of the High Court, will cease to be a Recorder with effect from the same day.

The biographical note of Mr TANG is as follows:

Mr TANG was born in Shanghai in 1947. After obtaining LL.B. from Birmingham University in 1969, he was called to the Bar of Gray's Inn in England in 1969, to the Bar in Hong Kong in 1970, to the Bar of Victoria, Australia, in 1984, to the Bar of the State of New York in USA in 1986 and was admitted as Barrister in Singapore in 1992. He has been in private practice since 1970 and was appointed as Queen's Counsel in 1986. He served as a Deputy District Judge and Deputy Judge of the High Court in 1982 and 1986 respectively. He was appointed as a Recorder of the Court of First Instance of the High Court in 1995.
