Local farms to send chickens to wholesale market tomorrow

*********************************************************

Arrangements will be made for local farms to send their chickens to the wholesale market tomorrow, a spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said today (March 16).

The agreement was reached after the department met with some chicken farmers and wholesalers today.

"The chicken farmers expressed concern about the suspension of trading in local chickens," The spoksman said. "We then met some wholesalers who have been involved in the sale of local chickens and urged them to resume trading as soon as possible.

"It was then agreed to arrange for chicken farms to resume sending chickens to the Cheung Sha Wan Temporary Wholesale Poultry Market tomorrow evening. The chickens are expected to be sent to the retail outlets for sale on Thursday.

"We will remain vigilant in our surveillance of avian influenza for the protection of public health," he said.
