Education on avian flu prevention stepped up

****************************************

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has stepped up education on prevention of avian influenza in the wake of outbreaks of the disease in neighbouring areas.

A spokesman for the department said the move was intended to increase public awareness on the importance of observing personal hygiene to prevent avian influenza.

He said specially organised health talks would be conducted from today (February 6) at schools, elderly homes and community venues to deliver important tips on avian influenza prevention.

"To ensure that the anti-avian influenza messages are understandable, a power point presentation will be used in the talks," the spokesman said.

"The presentation covers various aspects of avian influenza, including its transmission mode, symptoms and prevention.

"It also suggests the 'dos and don'ts' in everyday life to guard against the disease.

"There will also be quizzes to arouse the interest of participants in the talks," he noted.

In addition to the talks, a roving exhibition carrying similar safety messages will be held from the middle of this month at popular community venues, including shopping arcades in public housing estates.

"It is hoped that these talks and exhibitions can enhance public awareness on the importance of observing good hygiene to protect themselves against avian influenza," the spokesman said.

A total of 114 talks will be held this month at various places and schools. Besides, arrangements have been made for 52 community groups to visit the department's Health Education Exhibition and Resource Centre, where information on avian flu prevention are being displayed.

Schools, elderly centres and community groups are welcome to call the FEHD's Health Education Exhibition and Resource Centre on 2377 9275 for health talk arrangements.
