Anti-crime operation in Kowloon West Region

Police arrested 261 persons and seized a large quantity of suspected obscene and pirated Video Compact Discs (VCDs) in an anti-crime operation jointly with the Immigration Department, Customs and Exercise Department and Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority.

In the operation that ended at 2 am today (November 7), a number of commercial and shopping centres in the Mong Kok area were raided.

A total of 261 persons, comprising 240 females and 21 males aged between 14 and 62, were arrested for various offences including breach of conditions of stay, possession of obscene articles for the purpose of publication, possession of dutiable goods and copyright related offences.

Police seized about 114 000 suspected obscene VCDs and 23 000 contraband cigarettes amounting $3.7 million in total.

A Police spokesman reiterated that such operations would be conducted regularly to curb the source of income of triad societies.
