Speech by FS

************

Following is the speech by the Financial Secretary, Mr Henry Tang, at the "Hong Kong International Musical Fireworks Competition Finale" at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre tonight (October 12):

Selina, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Over the last two weeks we have seen some of the most spectacular and enthralling firework displays. For the first time in Hong Kong, we offer the chance to some of the best fireworks experts in the world to demonstrate their skill in a competition. The results have been breathtaking. I am delighted to be here to share the experience with so many people from our local community and visitors from overseas.

The International Musical Fireworks Competition is the latest in the series of major events held under the Economic Relaunch Programme. Judging from the response, I am sure that a lot of people have visited Hong Kong and also they have boosted our local consumption. These events also staged for the local community to enjoy, to help restore confidence and in particular to stimulate the local economy. The results are plain to see.

To further capitalise on the world's tourist market, the Government is continuing to push ahead with our major infrastructural developments, such as the Hong Kong Disneyland, the Tung Chung Cable Car system and the Hong Kong Wetland Park which are all scheduled for completion in 2005. For the nearer term, we will launch the spectacular Harbour Lighting Show in December. All these projects will continue to enhance Hong Kong's attractiveness as a major tourist destination and maintain our competitive edge in the Region.

This evening we shall see the second part of the competition among the masters in the art of fireworks. I congratulate the participants on the high standards they have achieved. I also must thank the Hong Kong Tourism Board for their organisation of this event. These have truly shown how Hong Kong is "living it, loving it".

Thank you.
