Cyber crime investigation and training seminar held

******************************************

A three-day information technology (IT) investigation and training seminar for investigators and trainers in the Asia-South Pacific Region concluded today (October 8) with a view to enhancing co-operation and improving capability in cyber crime investigation within the Region.

A Police spokesman said that the IT seminar was a result of the 4th meeting of the Interpol Asia-South Pacific Working Party on Information Technology (IT) Crime held in Seoul, Korea last year.

"Through active panel discussions amongst the participants, the seminar concluded this morning with great success in terms of consolidation of valuable experience and concepts as well as identifying the way forward," the spokesman added.

During the three-day seminar, participants agreed that technology crime was a cause of concern to all jurisdictions and that closer and better co-operation at various levels among different jurisdictions was required in the fight against technology crime.

Collaboration of technology crime training in the Region was cost effective and essential to foster closer liaison and better understanding and hence should be further looked into.

They also agreed that seminar of this nature was very useful and should be organised on a regular basis.

The seminar, co-hosted by Interpol General Secretariat and the Hong Kong Police, was well attended by 30 cyber crime experts from eight different jurisdictions including Interpol General Secretariat, Mainland, the Philippines, Korea, Japan, Australia, Macau and Hong Kong.

The Interpol Asia-South Pacific Working Party on IT Crime, first formed in 1998, has its annual meeting for members to report significant issues relating to technology crime.

The present chairman of the working party is from the Australasian Centre for Policing Research with the Hong Kong Police providing the vice chair.

The next meeting of the working party will be held in Shanghai later this month.
