Nominations for District Council Election open on Thursday

*********************************************************

A two-week nomination period for the 2003 District Council Election is set to begin this Thursday (October 2), a spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office said today (September 30).

Any registered elector aged 21 or above who has ordinarily resided in Hong Kong for the three years immediately before nomination may enter the contest.

A total of 400 District Council members for 18 District Councils, one for each constituency, will be elected on November 23.

Nomination forms are now available at the 18 District Offices or the Registration and Electoral Office at 15/F, Guardian House, 32 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong.

Nominees must submit a completed nomination form and a deposit of $3,000 in person to the Returning Officer concerned during normal business hours.

Each nomination must be subscribed by 10 registered electors of the constituency in which the nominee will be contesting. No more than 20 subscribers should be included in a nomination and each elector is entitled to subscribe to only one nomination.

The District Officers of the 18 districts have been appointed the Returning Officer for their respective district. They will receive nomination papers and deal with other electoral matters.

The spokesman called on all nominees to return their nomination forms as early as possible so that any mistakes in their entries might be rectified before nominations closed.

Enquiries on nomination procedures should be addressed to the Returning Office of the constituency concerned or the election hotline at 2891 1001.
