Nominations for District Council Election open on October 2

*********************************************************

The two-week nomination period for the 2003 District Council Election will run from October 2 to 15.

One member will be returned for each of the 400 constituencies in the 18 Districts on November 23.

Any registered elector aged 21 or above who has ordinarily resided in Hong Kong for the three years immediately before nomination may contest the election, a spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office said today (September 22).

Nomination forms are available at the 18 District Offices or the Registration and Electoral Office, 15/F, Guardian House, 32 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai.

Nominees must submit a completed nomination form and a deposit of $3,000 in person to the Returning Officer concerned during business hours. Each nomination must be subscribed by 10 qualified electors of the constituency concerned. The ceiling of electors subscribed to a nomination is 20. Each elector is entitled to subscribe to only one nomination.

The spokesman urged nominees to return their nomination forms as early as possible so that any mistakes in their entries may be rectified before nominations close.

Enquiries about nomination procedures should be addressed to the Returning Officer concerned or the election hotline, 2891 1001.

The Electoral Affairs Commission has appointed by gazette notice the District Officers in the 18 Districts as the Returning Officers. They will receive nomination papers and deal with other electoral matters for the District Council Election.
