SARS experts brief Chief Executive

**********************************

Members of the Hospital Management and Administration Group under the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) Expert Committee paid a courtesy call on the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, today (June 26) at his office.

The group began a three-day meeting to review the management and control of the SARS outbreak in Hong Kong.

Chairman Sir Cyril Chantler briefed Mr Tung on the group's plans and the issues they would look into.

Sir Cyril said Hong Kong provided a frontline defence against the new virus and its experience in combating the disease was of great importance to other places around the world.

"The SARS crisis has brought into focus the need for us to improve our public health system, the need to set up a CDC-type organisation and the need to ensure that we can cope with another epidemic," Mr Tung said.

He thanked the members for their efforts and looked to them for expert advice on how to better prepare Hong Kong for any future outbreaks.
