Today (June 25), the Department of Health (DH) received a report from the Guangdong health authority confirming a case of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in a 77-year-old Hong Kong woman. The woman was reported to be in stable condition. The woman arrived at Guangzhou around noon of June 3. Later in the day, she developed fever and was admitted to a hospital in Guangzhou. As a precautionary measure, her six close contacts in Hong Kong were put under confinement by DH and none developed symptoms. DH's record revealed that the woman was an in-patient of North District Hospital where she was treated for other illness between May 20 and 21, during which a SARS patient had been staying in the same ward. DH has conducted health surveillance on the woman until June 1. She developed no SARS symptoms throughout the surveillance period. End/Wednesday, June 25, 2003 NNNN
