Consumers should stop using UV-C (short-wavelength ultraviolet) lamps because of safety concerns, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department said today (June 17).

The department has discovered that this type of UV-C lamp is being sold on the retail market for household use. The lamps are not suitable for household use as the UV-C radiation emitted is harmful to health, especially to unprotected eyes and skin. The UV-C lamps must be used with proper protective shielding to avoid exposure to harmful UV-C radiation.

The department has taken immediate action against the product's local agent, BMC Modern Lighting & Electronic (Int'l) Ltd. The agent has agreed to stop selling the lamps and to start a voluntary recall.

The UV-C lamp in question comprises a lamp fitting and an 8W transparent UV-C lamp tube. The lamp fitting bears the trade name "T5 Professional Lighting Products" and the model reference "T5-8W" is on the plastic packing box.

Consumers who are in possession of the UV-C lamps are advised to stop using them immediately and to return them to the agent for a refund.
