Situation report on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

The following is jointly issued by the Department of Health and the Hospital Authority:

There are two new confirmed cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) today (May 23). This is the 20th day in a row that Hong Kong's daily infection cases were in single digits. It is also the eighth consecutive day with a daily figure below five.

One of today's confirmed cases is a healthcare worker of Prince of Wales Hospital.

A total of 1255 patients have recovered from SARS and have been discharged from public hospitals. Of them, 8 were discharged today. There are now 146 active cases under treatment in hospitals, of whom 40 patients are in intensive care unit. Most of the patients currently in hospital are showing positive responses to the treatment protocol. In addition, 63 are recovering patients in convalescence and in preparation for discharge.

Two patients died in United Christian Hospital (UCH) and Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH). This brought to 260 the total number of deaths relating to SARS.

The deceased include two women aged 57 and 89. Their information is as follows:
