Situation report on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

The following is jointly issued by the Department of Health and the Hospital Authority:

There is only one new confirmed case of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) today (May 21). The same figure was also recorded on May 19, the lowest since we started releasing statistics on infection cases. It is also the 18th day in a row that Hong Kong's daily infection cases were in single digits.

Today, there is no SARS case involving healthcare worker. This is the third consecutive day that has no healthcare worker infected (May 19, 20 and 21).

A total of 1237 patients have recovered from SARS and have been discharged from public hospitals. Of them, 8 were discharged today. There are now 165 active cases under treatment in hospitals, of whom 42 patients are in intensive care unit. Most of the patients currently in hospital are showing positive responses to the treatment protocol. In addition, 62 are recovering patients in convalescence and in preparation for discharge.

Two patients died in Wong Tai Sin Hospital (WTSH). This brought to 255 the total number of deaths relating to SARS.

The deceased include one man and one woman. Their information is as follows:
