Situation report on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

The following is jointly issued by the Department of Health and the Hospital Authority:

As at 1 pm today (May 17), there is an additional four patients confirmed to have Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) following admission to public hospitals earlier. They include one healthcare worker from Queen Mary Hospital. The remaining three are other patients and contacts of patients with SARS.

A total of 1191 patients have recovered from SARS and have been discharged from public hospitals. Of them, 20 were discharged today. There are now 210 active cases under treatment in hospitals, of whom 47 patients are in intensive care unit. Most of the patients currently in hospital are showing positive responses to the treatment protocol. In addition, 66 are recovering patients in convalescence and in preparation for discharge.

Five patients died in Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), Caritas Medical Centre (CMC), Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) and Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital(AHNH). This brought to 243 the total number of deaths relating to SARS.

The deceased include two men and three woman aged 54 to 92. Their information is as follows:
