CLP Lights Up Hong Kong 2003

******************************

On the evening of the Lunar New Year (February 1), the Hong Kong Cultural Centre (HKCC) in Tsim Sha Tsui will become a beacon of light at the heart of Victoria Harbour, as its harbour-facing facade will be transformed into a magical, dazzling homage to culture, through the dynamic power of light.

The Commissioner for Tourism, Mrs Rebecca Lai, announced at a press conference today (January 27) that the lighting show, "CLP Lights Up Hong Kong 2003" organised by the Tourism Commission with the generous sponsorship from CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power), would be staged in the evenings of February 1 and 3-7 to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

This spectacular lighting show will feature a range of effects including a state-of-the art lighting system, giant scenic image projections and laser graphics. These effects will be combined into a unique show backed by an enthralling musical score and complementary architectural lighting as a celebration for the Year of the Ram. The score itself embraces classical, contemporary and traditional styles, loosely inspired by the five elements of EARTH, WATER, WOOD, METAL, and FIRE - these five moods will lead the viewer through a journey of the senses.

The Show will showcase some of the lighting techniques which may be used in the Harbour Lighting Plan currently under development by the Tourism Commission.

Mrs Rebecca Lai said. "The Harbour Lighting Plan is a major initiative intended to add a new dimension to the night view of Victoria Harbour by building on the existing lighting displays. By showing what can be achieved, we hope this lighting show will help members of the public appreciate what can be done and understand how modern, energy-efficient lighting techniques can add to our wonderful night vista. It is also an excellent celebration of the Year of the Ram for both Hong Kong people and visitors."

Managing Director of CLP Power, Mrs Betty Yuen, said. "As the major provider of light and power in Hong Kong serving nearly 80% of the population, CLP Power is committed to the territory's long-term prosperity. Through this title sponsorship , CLP Power hopes to continue its support to the efforts of building Hong Kong to a better place and promoting its reputation as Asia's World City."

In December 2001, CLP Power also sponsored an event with a similar name - CLP Lights Up Hong Kong - which was a light and pyrotechnic show on the Tsim Sha Tsui East waterfront, as part of a major campaign organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

"CLP Lights Up Hong Kong 2003" will be officially launched by the Financial Secretary, Mr Antony Leung, at 7.30 pm on February 1. Charitable organizations and tourist groups have been invited to attend the inaugural show.

A total of 38 lighting shows will be staged for public viewing. Admission to this 12-minute lighting show is free but special access arrangements will be in operation for public safety reasons.
