Shanxi Song & Dance Troupe to tell stories of Yellow River

***********************************************

Shanxi Song and Dance Troupe will be here in mid-February to perform a song and dance gala featuring excerpts of award-winning productions which tells different stories of the Yellow River.

Programmes include excerpts of full-scale song and dance performance "Love on the Yellow River" (prize-winning production of the Wenhua Award), Shanxi folk dance "By the Yellow River" (prize-winning production of the Laurel Grand Prix at Shanghai International Arts Festival and the Gold Award of the Chunlan Cup presented by CCTV), full-length dance epic "The Yellow River Flows" (prize-winning piece of the Wenhua Award and the Five One Projects Award) and many more.

Other attractions include male and female vocal solo, dizi solo, Chinese wind and percussion music, suona solo, etc.

The Shanxi Song and Dance Troupe was founded in 1954. Since then it has produced and staged more than 3,200 works. Its large-scale song and dance productions "Love on the Yellow River", "By the Yellow River" and "The Yellow River Flows" are forerunners of a distinctive 'Yellow River Style of Song and Dance' and have won the troupe many accolades. The Troupe's performance often demonstrates the ethnic features in music and dance of the Shanxi region. But other than this, the Troupe also injects foreign dance idioms and modern features into its performance. The result is a repertoire that is more than ethnic but is in pace with the times.

It has been invited to tour Japan, Austria, France, U.S.A., Indonesia, Singapore and Taiwan and won popular acclaim. This is the third visit of the Troupe to Hong Kong after the successful performances of By the Yellow River and The Yellow River Flows in 1990 and 1997.

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Song and Dance Variety Performance "Love on the Yellow River" by Shanxi Song and Dance Troupe will be staged at 8 pm from February 14 to 16 (Friday to Sunday) at Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun and Sha Tin Town Halls respectively. Each night features different programme highlights. Tickets priced at $180, $130 and $90 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (Discount tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
